About the Artist:

Carolyn Morgan is a senior artist who was born in outback Queensland. The western landscape has always been of intense interest. Winner of several local art prizes, Carolyn concentrates on making conceptual landscapes, abstract and figurative works. The work begins with many layers of abstracted marks before the final subject appears. This intuitive way of painting means the work is fresh and dynamic, relying on serendipity, unusual colours, and rich textures discovered during the painting process. Carolyn attended the Queensland College of Art in the 60s and now paints subjects she chooses in her Brisbane studio.

The "Stradbroke" painting is done in oils on a wooden panel, Carolyn's preferred surface for landscape/seascape works. Dynamic skies, coupled with highly textured foregrounds, are a signature process. Journeys to Stradbroke Island featured heavily as an art student in the 60s and Carolyn has never forgotten the rawness of the unspoiled landscape from those times. This painting captures the atmosphere of a receding storm, leaving the twisted and broken landscape behind. A hint of sunshine touches the sand, beckoning the viewer to the sea.

Our viewpoint determines much of what we make of the world.

Hunter’s Hill depicts my grandparent’s property during severe drought. The landscape portrays the extremes of the Australian climate. The painting has a deep spiritual meaning for me: I feel the pain of the land through my ancestral connection to Country and my non-Indigenous grandfather’s deep connection with the bush.

About the Artist:

Alan trained at Glasgow School of Art 1976-1981
Worked as an Illustrator in the 80s with Ian Fleming Agency in London working on numerous commissions. He then became a scenic artist for photographic shoots and events at the same time as being a muralist for DKT; a specialist decoration agency in London working in large private properties creating 17/18th century style works.
Migrated to Brisbane in 2006 where he paints and mentors students.

I took a 3 day trip to Moreton Island on an Artists retreat in 2021 where I made many sketches, studies and finished pieces working En Plein Air with 7 other artists. It was a welcome experience to be out of Brisbane and on a ferry to an island I,ve never been. A short walk from the campsite was the Blue Lagoon where we could go swimming also. Far from being blue, it was a more murky shade of brown but still nonetheless a lovely area to sit and do some watercolour sketches. This study of that area is in oil, which I had not used in 35 years so I was finding my way a lot with the medium. The tree at the lagoon became a favourite spot to sit next to, up a little hill.

In the northern suburbs of Sydney lies and extensive sandstone outcrop of seemingly un-nourished dry scrub. I love the endurance of this stand of Angophora's which occur more commonly in the slightly wetter coastal regions. Amazingly they change through the seasons from bright orange through to a dull grey, before they shed their bark to start the process all over.

Having spent the last seven years in Brisbane, I've become accustomed to the evolving landscape of the city, constructed by towering cranes. This work is taken from the site of the new Queen's Wharf development overlooking the river (Maiwar). Those long, elegant structures remind me of flocks of crane birds. Created in white paper they now become a landscape of their own, with a subtle connection to a childhood pastime of folding paper cranes.

A contained ‘forest’ shows signs of intrusion by the built-environment, while the draftsman happily plans the next phase of development. With the surveyor’s sight and bulldozer at the ready, a ghostly gum-tree hovers, as a reminder of what might be at stake.
These two stylistically disparate images tell a story, drawn from my anxieties around the plight of our natural environment. As well as the unfolding narrative, by presenting two very different image styles side by side, the work also sets up a conversation about representation and interpretation in image making.

Moving Mountains is Lee’s first landscape oil painting. Her artistic career to date has predominantly comprised of figurative works. In her large-scale oil paintings, she often expresses social and personal views with a strong, feminine sentiment.

Selected as a finalist for the 21 Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize, 2018 Redland Art Award and has been a three-time finalist in both the Lethbridge 20000 Smalls Award and the Sunshine Coast Art Prize. Twice selected as a finalist in the Clayton Utz Art Award and the Royal QLD Art Society Figurative Award. Lee also exhibited in the 60th Blake Prize + National Touring Exhibition.

Joan is a Master Pastellist and Life member of The Pastel Society of Australia and is also a long standing member of the Half Dozen Group of Artists. A scholarship with the Pastel Society of America took her to New York in 1999. She has exhibited, and tutored with both groups and beyond.

While touring in Victoria a friend took me to tour the Dandelions. At Lunch time we found a picnic spot and spread our rug with this wonderful view in sight. The thistles i know are a farmer's curse but I think make a wonderful foreground for the rolling distance.

About the Artist:

Zorica Purlija has spent the past twenty years practicing as a fine art photographer and raising her family. She is currently based in Sydney. Of Montenegrin heritage, she migrated from Serbia to Australia in 1972 at age 8. Immersed in an unfamiliar culture and language, she learned that the nuances of human interaction were often more revealing than words. After graduating with distinction in graphic design and photography she travelled to Europe, where she devoted several years to the experience of life and art. In 2020 she completed her Masters of Art in Photo Media at the UNSW School of Art and Design.

Zorica’s practice is focused on attachments; the psychology and space around our primary relationships and how it impacts the future self. Her work incorporates ethereal elements of landscape and everyday objects seen in new ways. Zorica’s art is informed by her feminist values.

Zorica exhibits widely with recent exhibitions in Manhattan, Zurich and Venice. She has been a finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize, HeadOn Portrait Prize, the Bowness Award, the Kuala Lumpur Photographic Portrait Award, the Ulrick Award and the Olive Cotton Award.

In this series my desire is to reclaim the wholeness we are born with in Nature, a symbiosis forgotten about with the progress of modernization. The figure and landscape are one, both reveling in the beauty of each other.

The landscape here is of a place imbued with body, memory and life itself.

Isolated by distance and COVID-19, the northern outpost of Highfield may be a paradigm of Tasmania itself – cut from the mainstream, often out of sight, out of mind. Architect Henry Hellyer suicided – his ghost appears at Highfield - but hope springs eternal, and tourism, like the garden, is flowering again.

This painting called THE TRAIN was painted at sunset at a very beautiful part of Australia at Macquarie Harbour, Western Tasmania near the Terminus of the reconstruction of the original train that ran between Strahan at Regatta Point and the Mount Lyell Mine in Queenstown. The ABT Rack and Pinion System opened in 1897 and became a Tourist train in 2002. The area is a very popular Tourist destination and an environmental gem.

This work celebrates the rugged beauty of the Kangaroo Point Cliffs, Brisbane. It captures the moment when the afternoon light hits the cliffs volcanic rock, creating a glowing wall of warm light above the cool deep shadows of the Brisbane River below. It was a joy to create this work and develop the craggy textures of the cliffs. This was achieved through thick application of paint utilising a palette knife and other scraping tools.

Japanese Garden is a large landscape of an area in the Mount Koot-tha Botanical Garden in Brisbane. The garden reminds me of the beautiful landscapes in Singapore, where I lived for several years. The dappled light gives a sense that you can walk into the painting.

My homage to urban city-scape street-art, gives transient 2D public art a permanent 3D representation. I tagged each photograph with my own graffiti and made Art Deco-style “building” forms with decals of my photos. A reference also to the two-dimensionality (screens) in which much of our lives are lived today.
