About the Artist

A Brief History

Travel has been an important part of Michelle Caitens’ life and this has greatly influenced her appreciation of the natural world and the role art can play in the telling of its story. Perhaps influenced by her love of the precision and drama of ballet, and inspired by the visually arresting and dramatic lighting used by Caravaggio and Rembrandt in the 16th and 17th centuries, Michelle is drawn to strong contrasts of light and shadow and the intricacy of detail. This intensity can direct attention to the elements of a painting much like stage lighting can in a dramatic performance.
